Troop 1332 has just recently recieved a reservation to trek in 2010 at Philmont Scout Ranch.
Philmont Scout Ranch is located in northeastern New Mexico, and is some of the nations premier hiking area. For 65 years, Boy Scouts from around the world have trekked Philmonts trails, canyons, fields and mountains. Base camp is at 6,700 and the tallest mountain in the region is at 12,441. Depending on the trek selected, youth will hike anywhere from 55 miles to 96 miles during their 10 days on the trail and at elevations.
Youth who are 14 18 years old at the time of the trek are eligible. You do NOT need prior backpacking or trekking experience you will be taught !
Last year the Troop 1332 was confirmed for 8 youth and 4 adults (1 crew).
Arrival and Departure:
The arrival date is 7/3/2010.
The departure date is 7/15/2010.
Days at Philmont:
The crew spend 13 (?) days at Philmont.
The crews are on the trails for 10 days.
Travel Times and Dates
Travel time to and from Philmont requires 2 days each way.
Last year: The Troop departed Houston on August 4 or 5, 2008 allowing for easy travel to Philmont, some sightseeing, and the opportunity to acclimate at the higher elevations.
The crew will arrived in Houston on August 22, 2008.
Changes in the processing of applications has changed this year as well as several prerequisites for trekking. Please read and note the new information and how it affects you.
Cost
Total Philmont cost for the trek is $620. Costs associated with gearing-up and travel expenses will bring the total cost of the trek to an estimated TBD (To Be Determined)per person.
*** Each participant needs to make a $50 deposit by the Court of Honor, 1/29/2009
- At least one and preferably two persons on the trek are required to be current in certification for the Wilderness First Aid Basic course.
As part of the training and team building for all members trekking Philmont, we will attend, as a group, the Wilderness First Aid Basic course offered in April 2007 by the American Red Cross at Camp Strake. This 16-hour course will prepare you for medical emergencies in the backcountry during your trek.
Participation in this course is not optional, attendance is mandatory.

Itinerary selection
To be determined but within days of the itinerary package being received from Philmont Scout Ranch. This is NOT mandatory but if you are not there when the meeting is called, you will have no input to your trek.
March (Date to be announced) Health and safety review, 7 9 PM
Wildewood Baptist Church Combined session with the Venturing Crew and the Boy Scout Troop to review first aid protocols to use, review level of training and skills in each Crew,to inventory each first aid kit. Required session for each trekker,skills assessment will be made. WFAB, WAFA and CPR cards should be brought to this meeting.
Trekking discipline and basic navigation, 7 9 PM
Wildewood Baptist Church. This is a group discussion on the basics of appropriate trekking and hiking discipline and basic land navigation.
This session will include protocols for safe and efficient trekking,steep ascents and descents,and the basics of land navigation at Philmont. We will have minimum compass work at this workshop. All trekking members of Venturing Crew 2020 and Boy Scout Troop 1332 are invited.
Cooking demonstration,1 4 PM
Burroughs Park
Bring cup, Nalgen, and dress appropriate for the weather, Unit activity uniform required; chairs may be brought. No cost, you will have some Philmont-style food and beverages served. Will be hands on demonstration on setting a field kitchen, stoves, sanitation and water purification. NOTE: Please let instructors know at the training if you have an iodine allergy.
Leave No Trace,1 4 PM
Spring Creek Park
Bring cup, Nalgen, and dress appropriate for the weather, Unit activity uniform required. All persons going to Philmont are required to have this orientation. Previous attendance at LNT training is accepted, your
attendance at this training is appreciated.
Philmont equipment check,6 10 PM
Wildewood Baptist Church
Full pack check for the Troop trekkers. Bring fully loaded back pack and travel bag, and other equipment that you may want to bring. Full bag check for the Crew riders. Bring all your equipment and work with Advisors to load the bag and review the equipment.
Additional training dates will be set as necessary and appropriate. Locations may be changed if necessary. |
